Friday Favorites #28: Flowers For Goodness Sake

July 19, 2019 by Amelia Leave a Comment

Happy Friday! Thank goodness the weekend is almost here. This was not the most relaxing or cheerful week. It was one of those tough weeks in veterinary medicine when I had to deliver a lot of sad news at work. Some days being a vet is emotionally draining. Thankfully there were some sweet puppies and great coworkers in the mix.

Jameson also had his surgery this week. He has been such a champ and is doing well. Playing the role of pet owner versus veterinarian felt weird, but it was also a nice reminder of what it’s like to be on the other side. Despite this being a stressful week I do have a lot of things that made me pretty darn happy, too. Once again I’m sharing the things that made me smile this week. As always, I’d love to hear what things you’re currently loving in the comments. Thanks for stopping by. <3

Listerine Gentle Gum Woven Floss

Off to a thrilling start, aren’t we? Apparently being in your 30’s means feeling hungover after having one drink and getting excited about dental floss. Cool. On the bright side, it only takes dental floss to make me happy. I’m also a cheap date.

But for real, I love this floss. It’s woven and minty and works SO much better than the typical thin kind. I buy it in bulk because it’s hard to find in stores and I never want to run out. But (gasp) I did this week. Not sure how it happened, but it did. I DID still floss in case you were worried, but it was a reminder how much better my normal floss is. Thankfully, Amazon ships quickly. I have my floss again and all is right with the world. If you like dental hygiene and feeling like your mouth is totally clean give this gem a try.

Flowers for Goodness Sake

I have to take a second to brag about my mom who is one of the kindest humans ever. She’s also an amazing gardener. Why I didn’t inherit that I’ll never know. Anyway, she constantly inspires me with her generosity and efforts to pay it forward. Last week she started her now annual tradition of “Flowers for Goodness Sake”.

My mom has incredible hydrangeas that totally thrive every year. Instead of just enjoying the blossoms at home, she puts up an adorable stand at her house with a sign to “take what you want, leave what you like”. Any donations that are left she puts towards a charity.

This year proceeds collected from “Flowers for Goodness Sake” benefit the local school district’s Backpack Program. That program helps to make sure kids in the community who typically get free or reduced lunches get bags of food during the summer – a time when they otherwise might not have enough to eat. She also is contributing to Anchorage’s Children’s Lunchbox program which is a similar program associated with their next race in Alaska (!) next month. Side note: my parents are on a quest to run a road race in every state. My mom documents their journey on her Running Fifty blog. They’re both an inspiration in many more ways than one.

flowers from the Farmer's market; flowers for goodness sake

I love this concept because something as simple as flowers can deliver so much joy. We picked up another bouquet from the Davidson’s Farmer’s Market this weekend and it adds so much life and color to my kitchen throughout the week. As a bonus, it feels good to support local business like Herr Fresh Flowers. I love that with the “Flowers for Goodness Sake” someone not only gets a gorgeous bouquet of hydrangeas to enjoy or gift, but they also get that awesome feeling of giving. I adore this concept and clearly need to find another way to pay it forward since my idea of a successful garden is my thriving basil. The weeds are starting to thrive again, too.

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat

best nail top coat

I have painted my nails two weeks in a row, so pretty much I have my whole life together. If we were going to make a list of things I’m most horrible at, ruining my nails two seconds after they’ve been painted is high on that list.

The last time I got a manicure literally as soon as the nail technician walked away I needed to call her back because I had somehow already smudged one. I’m a treat. It’s just that the amount of time where I’m suddenly completely useless and incapable of using my hands for anything is sooooo long. I really do try to stay still and not use my hands. But my max is maybe five minutes before I decide I could at least try to reach into my purse or drive home or do SOMETHING. And that assumption that I could do anything successfully without ruining my nails is wrong 100% of the time. Do I learn? No I do not.

So since I’m stubborn and incapable of sitting still for any length of time, I’ve had to accept that and look for solutions. That solution is this AMAZING Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Nail Coat. For less than $6 this bottle saves both my nails and my sanity. After painting my nails I wait maybe a minute then I apply this top coat. I let it dry for about a minute. Sometimes I use my hair dryer to speed up the process. That probably does nothing to speed up the process but it does keep me busy for a moment. After that I can touch my nails and they’re fine!

You don’t have to suffer through an hour of your nails being sort of okay but actually not at all. Because who has time for that?? Seriously, I adore this stuff. Life. saver. Okay, okay, let’s not be dramatic: nail saver.

500 Rep Challenge

I’m still loving Daniella Chinitz’s Instagram account for workout inspiration. She recently posted this 500 Rep Challenge workout, and it’s pretty bomb (do people other than me say that anymore? Probs no). It’s a great full body workout and got my heart rate up. I set a timer because I love the challenge of seeing how quickly I can finish. If you’re not into that kind of time pressure, I love that this workout is challenging no matter what pace you take. Let me know if you give it a try, too!

Important question: how do you NOT ruin your nails immediately after getting a manicure? What’s the best nail top coat you’ve found?

Please share a random act of kindness or paying it forward story. Reading about these would be the perfect end to a long week. <3
